The IMATA (International Marine Animals Trainer Association) conference takes place at Zoomarine, in Albufeira, during this week.

Between the 14th and 19th of October, Zoomarine hosts hundreds of marine animal training specialists from more than 70 countries for the annual IMATA congress. IMATA is one of the most prestigious international organizations regarding nature conservation techniques and has now chosen Portugal, for the second time in 45 years, as the host country for the congress.

The keynote speaker is Javier Almunia, director of Loro Parque Fundación, an NGO that funds and implements nature conservation projects in more than 40 countries, elected president of the European Association or Aquatic Mammals (EAAM) and vice president of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The event will also feature guest speakers Mats Amudin, senior adviser to the largest zoo in Scandinavia, and Dr. Geraldine Lacave, an expert in marine mammal veterinary services.

Zoomarine has been distinguished with nine awards from IMATA, which recognise the excellence of research and technical developments carried out by the marine life centre.
